Following is information about competitions held during NANOSMAT conferences:

1) Young Scientist lecture Competition

First started in 2010 during the 5th NANOSMAT conference in Reims, France, the Young Scientist's Lecture Competition has gained popularity and prestige. The 2010 lecture competition was sponsored by CNR (Italy). This competition will be held with every NANOSMAT conference annually. The aim of the Young Scientist's Lecture Competition is to provide a friendly atmosphere competition for young scientists working in the fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology so that their presentation skills will improve whilst addressing an informed audience.


The competition is open to anyone who is following a post-graduate course study programme at a recognised university, in any aspect of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The competition is open to Young scientists who are either MSc or PhD students. Further, the maximum age of the student should be 35 years. The student will need to be pre-registered for the conference by paying student fee.


Each entrant will give a presentation lasting not more than 15 minutes on a subject of their choice about any aspect of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Facilities at the venue will permit PowerPoint presentations.


Questioning from three of the judges (appointed prior to the event) will take place immediately after each presentation. Each judge may ask one/two question(s).


A panel of three judges will adjudicate the competition. Judges will be made up of Academics and Industrialists.

Nomination Procedure

The Student's supervisor/advisor must submit the following items to 

(i) - a completed application form. Click here to download the form
(ii) - one copy of the abstract that the student wishes to present at the competition 
(iii) - a recommendation letter supporting the nomination 
Late or incomplete applications will not be evaluated

Nature of the Award

There will be three prizes:

  • Gold - Apple IPad
  • Silver - 200 Euros
  • Bronze - 100 Euros

In addition, each recipient will each receive a certificate. Winners will be named and awards presented during the conference banquet.

2) Best Poster Competition

NANOSMAT events host a poster competition. (The winner will receive a brand new APPLE IPAD).

Following are the rules for the poster competition:

  • All Poster presenting delegates who are registered (paid the correct registration fee) qualify to participate in the competition. [NB. If you have submitted your softcopy of your A1 size poster and you have not registered by paying the correct fee, your poster will be NOT be considered in the competition].
  • To be considered for the competition, poster presenting delegates should email a PDF file of their poster to by the date given on the conference website.
  • The Awards Committee will select the best poster
  • Posters must be of A1 size (in portrait). Authors should print the poster and bring it with them to the conference.
