NANOSMAT Prize

NANOSMAT Honours

NANOSMAT honours and recognizes international scientists who have shown, during the course of their professional careers, outstanding achievements in the fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

The following 5 Awards are on offer:

(i) NANOSMAT Prize – The NANOSMAT Prize was set up in 2009 and since then it has become very popular and very prestigious amongst high calibre senior international scientists (up to the age of 65). Scroll to the bottom of this page for past NANOSMAT Prize receipients.

(ii) NANOSMAT Award – The NANOSMAT Award is the same as the NANOSMAT Prize except it honors only scientists up to the age of 45 years.

(iii) Kroto Award – The KROTO Award (named after the late Nobel Prize Sir Harold Kroto) is a prestigious prize conferred on an outstanding, dynamic young researcher (PhD, PostDoc, Junior Scientist level) for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

(iv) NANOSMAT Medal – The NANOSMAT Medal recognises exceptional individuals whose recent outstanding achievements and discoveries, in the past ten years, have played a major role in enabling specific, key breakthroughs to occur and to impact and advance the progress of Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, Nanomedicine and Commercialisation of Nanotechnology.

(v) Jose Gracio Student Awards – These awards are in memory of the late Professor Jose Gracio who was one of the founders of NANOSMAT conference. We are offering 10 student awards, each year, for PhD students to attend and participate in (i) the NANOSMAT conference & (ii) the NANOSMAT School.

NANOSMAT Prize & “NANOSMAT Award”

1. NOMINATION PROCEDURE

Following are the different methods for candidature nomination for the award(s):

Members of the NANOSMAT Awards Committee can nominate candidates.
Any senior and prominent scientist or researcher, belonging to an internationally recognised and established institution, can nominate any one candidate for the prize/award (one nomination per person). However, such nominations must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the proposer supporting the nominated candidate for the award (together with the canddiates CV). NOTE: Please remember to mention the type of award (NANOSMAT Prize or NANOSMAT Award) the candidate is being nominated for.

1.1 Direct applications by the candidates (for the NANOSMAT Prize only and NOT for the NANOSMAT Award):

Note: Candidates may only nominate themselves for the NANOSMAT Prize and NOT for the NANOSMAT Award. For NANOSMAT Award – the above nomination procedure (section 1. Nomination Procedure) must be followed.

Self nominated candidates for the NANOSMAT Prize will need to email their updated CV´s covering the mentioned criteria (see below) to info@nanosmat.co.uk

2. Deadline for nominations for 2020

For the 2020 NANOSMAT Prize & NANOSMAT Award – the deadline for nomination submissions is 28 February 2019

NB: Late nominations will not be considered.

3. CRITERIA (for both NANOSMAT Prize and NANOSMAT Award)

The candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

1) Leadership

The candidate must be an outstanding scientist and a recognised leader in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology with a distinguished track record of original contributions in the NANO related field.

2) Research funding

It is essential that the scientist has an excellent track record of attracting financial support from funding institutes or centres to support their work.

3) Publications

The scientist must have published extensively in international peer reviewed and high impact factor journals (showing good citation index results).

4) Honors

The candidate’s international scientific visibility/credibility consequent of his/her significant contributions and professional standing in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology need to be profound and apparent. Evidence of international professional standing would be judged based on factors such as, international invitations, books authored, edited books/journals, other major prizes, international honors (honorary degrees, titles), etc.

5) Innovation

The scientist should be or have been engaged with innovative and cutting edge research. Scientists holding patents and involved with spin-out companies set up as a result of their work would be advantaged for this award.

4. NATURE OF AWARD (NANOSMAT Prize & NANOSMAT Award)

The prize will be composed of the following:

1. Personalised Plaque

2. A check for a modest amount

5. RULES

1. A candidate can only receive the prize once and not more than this.

2. The winner needs to attend the NANOSMAT conference in order to receive the prize.

3. NANOSMAT Prize & NANOSMAT Award Lectures would be given by the recipients at the conference.

4. The selection committee members cannot be considered for the award (unless they no longer sit in the selection committee).

5. Unsuccessful candidates can be re-considered for the award the following 2 years. Therefore, they will be in the system for a total of three years.

6. The candidates considered for the two awards must be of the following age(s):

(i) NANOSMAT Prize – the age of the candidates must fall within this age bracket 46-65 years

(ii) NANOSMAT Award – maximum age considered is 45 years.

6. SELECTION PROCESS

The NANOSMAT Awards Committee will review the applications (candidates CV and nomination letters) and select one successful scientist each for the two awards.

KROTO Award

1. NOMINATION PROCEDURE

Following are the different methods for candidature nomination for the award(s):

Members of the NANOSMAT SCHOOL Advisory Board can nominate candidates.
Any senior and prominent scientist or researcher, belonging to an internationally recognised and established institution, can nominate any one candidate for the award (one nomination per person). However, such nominations must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the proposer supporting the nominated candidate for the award.

2. DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2019

For the KROTO AWARD 2018 – the deadline for nomination submissions is 15 April 2019
NB: Late nominations will not be considered.

3. CRITERIA

The candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

1) International Visibility & Leadership

The candidate must be an outstanding and extremely dynamic researcher and must be recognised as an emerging leader in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology with a distinguished track record of original contributions in the NANO related field.

2) Publications

Candidates must have published extensively in international peer reviewed and high impact factor journals (showing good citation index results).

3) Innovation

The candidate should be or had been engaged with innovative and cutting edge research. Candidates holding any patents and/or involved with setting up of high-tech spin-out companies as a result of their work would be greatly advantaged for this award.

4. NATURE OF AWARD

The prize will be composed of the following:

1. A unique KROTO AWARD plaque
2. A certificate
3. Free registrations for (i) NANOSMAT SCHOOL & (ii) NANOSMAT Conference

5. RULES

1. A candidate can only receive the prize once and not more than this.
2. The winner needs to attend the NANOSMAT SCHOOL to personally receive the award.
3. The winning candidate will deliver the “KROTO AWARD Lecture” at the NANOSMAT conference.
4. Unsuccessful candidates can be re-considered for the award the following 2 years. Therefore, they will be in the system for a total of three years.
5. The candidates for the award must be of maximum 35 years of age.

6. SELECTION PROCESS

The committee will review the applications (candidates CV and nomination letters) and select one successful researcher for this prestigious award.

NANOSMAT Medal

1. NOMINATION PROCEDURE

For the NANOSMAT Medal – the candidate must submit the following documents:

Up to 3 Letters (max) of recommendation written by leading international experts in the fields supporting the candidates application
Candidates full CV
Statement highlighting and describing the novelty of work carried out by the candidate, any breakthroughs, new innovations and discoveries. This must be maximum 1 A4 side in length. This statement must be written by the candidate.
Statement about the potentials, contributions and impact of this work in advancing nanoscience, nanotechnology, nanomedicine and commercialisation of nanotechnology. This must be maximum 1 A4 side in length. This document needs to be prepared by the candidate.

In addition to self-nominations:

Members of the NANOSMAT Awards Committee can nominate candidates.
Any senior and prominent scientist or researcher, belonging to an internationally recognised and established institution, can nominate any one candidate for the prize/award (one nomination per person). However, such nominations must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the proposer supporting the nominated candidate for the award.

2. Deadline for nominations for 2019

For the 2019 NANOSMAT Medal – the deadline for nomination submissions is 15 April 2019

NB: Late nominations will not be considered.

3. CRITERIA

The criteria for this award is as follows: (i) “recent” innovation, breakthrough or discovery (in the last 10 years) & (ii) the impact that this work has had in the field.

4. NATURE OF AWARD

The prize will be composed of the following:

1. NANOSMAT Medal

2. Certificate

3. A check for a modest amount (awaiting confirmation)

5. RULES

1. A candidate can only receive the medal once and not more than this.

2. The winner needs to attend the NANOSMAT conference in order to receive the award.

3. The NANOSMAT Medal receipient is required to give a lecture at the NANOSMAT conference.

4. The selection committee members cannot be considered for this award (unless they no longer sit in the selection committee).

5. Unsuccessful candidates can be re-considered for the award the following 2 years. Therefore, they will be in the system for a total of three years.

6. Any new discovery of innovation reported by the candidate needs to have been carried out within the past 10 years at the time of submitting the application for the NANOSMAT medal award.

6. SELECTION PROCESS

A special NANOSMAT Awards Committee will review the applications and select one successful candidate.

Jose Gracio Student Awards

These awards are in memory of the late Professor Jose Gracio who passed away on October 11, 2014. Professor Gracio was the head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and also the Director of the “Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation” housed in this department. Moreover, Professor Gracio was one of the founders of the first ever NANOSMAT conference which was held in Portugal in 2005.

We are offering 10 student awards, each year, to attend and participate in (i) the NANOSMAT conference & (ii) the NANOSMAT School.

1. NOMINATION PROCEDURE

Following is the procedure for applying for one of the Jose Gracio Student Awards:

An up-to-date CV of the student applying is required. The CV must include the student’s list of peer-review journal publications.
A letter of recommendation from the PhD supervisor is necessary supporting the application.

The student applying must email both the CV plus the recommendation letter to info@nanosmat.co.uk

2. DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2019

For the Jose Gracio Student Awards 2019 – the deadline for applications is 28 February 2019
NB: Late nominations will not be considered.

3. NATURE OF AWARD

Each award will consist of: (1) a certificate; (2) FREE registration for (i) NANOSMAT Conference and (ii) NANOSMAT SCHOOL.

4. RULES

1. A candidate can only receive the prize once and not more than this.
2. The winner needs to attend the NANOSMAT Conference and the NANOSMAT SCHOOL.
3. The winner will be expected to help for one full day with conference organisation related work during the days of the Conference and the School.
4. The candidates for these awards must be registered for PHD studies.

5. SELECTION PROCESS

The committee will review the applications (candidates CV and recommendation letters) and select 10 successful PhD candidates for the Jose Gracio Student Awards.
